Native of the Great Lakes Region, Gabriel
McIntosh was born in Detroit, Michigan and now resides in
Chicago, Illinois. Both of these cities influence his work
with the polar contrasts of decaying art deco buildings of
Detroit to the skyscrapers of Chicago. Gabriel finds beautiful
and often opposing facets in everything he photographs and
aims to provide perspective in all his work. Also influenced
by his Ecuadorian heritage and his many visits to the Andes
Mountains and the Pacific coast of South America, Gabe is
intrigued with the art and culture that blends indigenous
Andean and Spanish colonial ideas.
Gabriel had his first exhibition after participating in Focus:
HOPE’s Focus on the Mission photography project, showing
work in Detroit’s Focus: HOPE Gallery in 1995. Almost
a decade later he participated in two gallery exhibitions
at Chicago’s MG Gallery. His photographs of Chicago’s
Grant Park have been given as gifts to foreign dignitaries
and guests of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs. His work
has also appeared on musician Dick Prall’s LP fizzlebuzzie
(White Rose Recordings, 2006).
Over the past ten years Gabriel has worked at Appel Farm
Arts and Music Center in Elmer, New Jersey, The Aspen Institute,
and The Chicago Council on Global Affairs. Gabriel will be
attending the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in the
fall to further expand his photography practice.
